World Diabetes Day is celebrated on 14th November each year. This year, it will be celebrated to promote the nurse’s role in the prevention and management of Diabetes. Nurses currently hold more than half of the Global Health force. With the rise in the number of patients with Diabetes, nurses, and other medical staff’s role becomes increasingly crucial in managing the condition’s impact.
So, What is Diabetes? It is a chronic disease where the Pancreas produces a low amount of Insulin or no insulin in the body that helps maintain the blood level in the blood.
To mark World Diabetes day 2020, a new online course in the IDF School of Diabetes on Diabetes educator’s role is available for free for a limited period. The course’s main aim is to educate nurses and other health professionals to support people with Diabetes and help them maintain a healthy lifestyle and healthy food. The course is free until 31st December 2020.
World Diabetes Day History

The first World Diabetes Day is dated back to 1991 and was launched by the International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organisation in response to the increasing rate of diabetes patients worldwide. By 2016, World Diabetes Day was being commemorated by over 230 IDF member associations in more than 160 countries and territories and other organizations, companies, healthcare professionals, politicians, celebrities, and people living with Diabetes and their families.
World Diabetes Day Themes
Different themes have been made each year to spread awareness about various factors that can affect Diabetes or influence the risk of Diabetes and its complications. Here’s a list of the themes that have been made.

- 2014: Go Blue for Breakfast.
- 2015: Healthy Eating.
- 2016: Eyes on Diabetes.
- 2017: Women and Diabetes – our right to a healthy future.
- 2018–2019: The Family and Diabetes – diabetes concerns every family.
World Diabetes Day Importance
- To draw attention toward this Chronic disease. Over 25 years, a record 380% increase in the cases of Diabetes has been recorded. WHO has also stated that by 2030, Diabetes will be the 7th deadly disease to kill people.
- Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented and cured. Most of people don’t even know that there are two types of Diabetes. Type 1 can’t be cured but can be kept in control using Insulin and a healthy diet and lifestyle. Whereas Type 2 can be prevented and cured.
- It is a reminder to make people aware of the deadly disease called Diabetes. Type 2 diabetes has been declared an epidemic disease. Still, Type 1 is also known as Juvenile Diabetes is also started to become a severe threat. 1.25 million Americans are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Still, the cause is unknown to the doctors. However, the health effects are as fatal as Type 2 diabetes.
All this concludes to the fact that Diabetes is a fatal illness. People are made aware of the symptoms so that the people having such symptoms can get tested and be treated accordingly. So, celebrate World Diabetes Day in a way to keep ourselves fit and healthy.
