Who Has Scored Most Runs In IPL Tournament?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the world’s largest domestic T20 league, and it has attained cult status in its 13 years of existence. IPL is where all superstars descend, whether they be Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, AB de Villiers, Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, or Chris Gayle. Run-scoring is synonymous with such a high batting quality. But who has scored the most runs in IPL history?

Who Has Scored Most Runs In IPL Tournament?

Players Matches Runs Average
Virat Kohli 207 6283 37.39
Shikhar Dhawan 192 5784 34.84
Rohit Sharma 213 5611 31.17
Suresh Raina 205 5528 32.51
David Warner 150 5449 41.49

Virat Kohli now holds the record for most runs in IPL history, having scored 6081 runs in 200 matches at an average of 37.44, including 40 half-centuries and five centuries. For the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kohli has been a run machine. He is the only batter to have appeared in 200 IPL games for a single club and is the team’s greatest run-scorer.

Shikhar Dhawan is the second-best run-scorer in IPL history, trailed only by Suresh Raina. David Warner has the most runs in the Indian Premier League among international exports, with AB de Villiers trailing him.

Here is a list of the top five players in IPL history in terms of runs.

1. Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli has been a rock for Royal Challengers Bangalore since the IPL’s beginning. No other batter in IPL history has more runs than Kohli, who is currently the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad. He has scored 6283 runs in 207 matches, with an average of 37.39 and a strike rate of 129.94. This comprises 40 half-centuries and five centuries, four of which were published in a single volume in 2016. It is unsurprising that Kohli has amassed the most runs in IPL history.

Kohli has led RCB to great success and is the team’s public face. He got the orange cap award in 2016 and has consistently produced runs for RCB. Kohli is the IPL’s and RCB’s all-time leading run-scorer.

2. Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan, who has played for four IPL teams, has the second-most runs in the league. His most successful stint was with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he appeared in 85 matches and scored 2518 runs at an average of 34.49. He has also produced well for his present teams, the Delhi Capitals (1859 runs in 55 innings) and the Deccan Chargers (969 runs in 29 innings). The left-hander appeared in only 15 games with the Mumbai Indians, averaging 16.5.

Shikhar Dhawan has totaled 5577 runs in 191 IPL innings, an average of 34.84. In the IPL, he has 44 half-centuries and two centuries.

3. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma’s career changed for the better when he transferred from the Deccan Chargers to the Mumbai Indians. He is the most successful captain of the most successful club in IPL history. He has led the Mumbai Indians to a record five titles and has been a batting force to be reckoned with. The MI captain ranks fourth all-time in IPL history, having scored 5611 runs in 213 matches at an average of 31.17. While his record with the Deccan Chargers was decent (1170 runs in 45 matches), Rohit Sharma has been outstanding with the Mumbai Indians, with 5611 runs in 208 matches.

4. Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina held the record for both playing the most matches and scoring the most runs in IPL history for the longest time. However, he did not appear in the 2020 edition of the IPL, therefore he has slid somewhat down both lists. The southpaw has played every game for the Chennai Super Kings or the now-defunct Gujarat Lions.

Raina has appeared in 205 IPL matches, scoring 5528 runs at an average of 32.51, with 39 half-centuries and one century to his name. Raina has scored 5528 runs in 200 innings for the Chennai Super Kings, while he has 841 runs in 29 innings with the Gujarat Lions.

5. David Warner

David Warner is the only batsman to have scored 500 runs in every IPL season since 2014, and he is undoubtedly an IPL GOAT! The left-handed opener has played 150 IPL innings and scored 5449 runs while averaging 41.59, including 50 fifties and four hundreds.

Warner began his IPL career with the Delhi Daredevils (now the Delhi Capitals), but it was at Sunrisers Hyderabad that he found his stride. He guided the team to title success in 2016 and has remained a fixture in the Sunrisers Hyderabad lineup ever since.

In the IPL, Warner has scored 943 runs in 20 matches against Punjab Kings, followed by Kolkata Knight Riders (915), Royal Challengers Bangalore (754), Mumbai Indians (661), and Chennai Super Kings (539).

There are a few names, like AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, and MS Dhoni, who are not far behind, and with IPL 2022 underway, they will be looking to break into the top five list of the tournament’s highest run scorers. Surprisingly, neither the Rajasthan Royals nor the Punjab Kings has a player in the top ten list of highest runs by batters. Will someone from the franchise crack the top five in the coming years?
