Mulaney is also recognized for his Netflix-released children’s musical comedy show John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch (2019).
Early Years:
Mulaney was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 26, 1982, to Ellen Mulaney (née Stanton), a professor at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, and Charles “Chip” Mulaney Jr., an attorney and Skadden Arps partner. His parents are both Catholics from Ireland. George J. Bates, Mulaney’s maternal great-grandfather, was a Republican mayor of Salem, Massachusetts, who also served in Congress.
William H. Bates, his maternal great-uncle, was also a U.S. representative. Carolyn Stanton, Mulaney’s maternal grandmother, and Hilary Meyers, mother of Mulaney’s future Saturday Night Live coworker Seth Meyers, appeared together in a hospital benefit performance called Pills A-Poppin’ in Marblehead, Massachusetts, directed by Tommy Tune, who was 19 at the time.
Their Divorce Was Caused By:
Mulaney’s personal issues were brought to light as fans showed their support for him on social media. Mulaney’s supporters ranged from fans to celebrities, and many of them sent words of encouragement after he underwent treatment. While Mulaney and others close to him have been tight-lipped about what he went through during therapy, it was reported that Mulaney made the decision to get assistance.
Official Announcement of Their Divorce:
After announcing their split in May of last year, John Mulaney and Anna Marie Tendler are now formally divorced. According to legal docs acquired by TMZ five months after the comedian originally filed, the pair signed the paperwork to legally dissolve their six-year marriage on Thursday. The pair met in 2010 and married in July 2014 in an intimate ceremony in the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York.
“John will not have any more comment as he continues to focus on his health and going back to work,” said a spokeswoman for Mulaney, who revealed the breakup in May 2021 after a period in treatment for alcoholism and cocaine addiction. “I am devastated that John has decided to dissolve our marriage,” Tendler said in her statement. As he continues his rehabilitation, I wish him strength and prosperity.”
Mulaney began dating actress Olivia Munn, who had previously described herself as an “obsessed” follower of the comedian, one week after their divorce was made public. Munn was revealed to be pregnant with her and Mulaney’s first child less than two months later. Despite reports of their split, the couple had a baby called Malcolm Hip Mulaney in November.

Tendler also pondered on her “tough and punishing” 2021 and the “unfathomable” grief we’ve all suffered following the birth announcement earlier this week, but still praying for a healing year ahead. “I find myself thinking, ‘When will I feel normal?’ but in fact, I understand that the normal from before has expired; ‘normal’ is an impossibility, and there is only ‘new,'” the artist continued.
He also made the difficult decision to divorce his now-wife, Annamarie Tendler. Mulaney was set to return home after completing in-patient treatment in February, according to Vulture. Mulaney’s homecoming and the divorce announcement are on the same timeframe. The actor “asked for a divorce from Tendler three months ago,” according to Page Six, which would have been the same month he finished therapy.
While no official reason for Mulaney’s decision to dissolve their marriage has been given as of this writing, many have speculated as to why the pair, who had always appeared to be in love publically, began to have problems. “It must have been so hard on her thereafter to remain by him so she must be upset,” one fan said on Buzzfeed News, “but eventually it may avoid a lot of grief down the line…”
