BCCI has plans to introduce the 9th team in the next edition of IPL, i.e., IPL 2021. With the ending of the challenging edition of IPL 2020, BCCI has been preparing for the forthcoming edition. BCCI is planning to have a complete auction before the start of the next edition.
The Hindu told that the BCCI hierarchy has indicated that the auction will be scheduled in the early month of next year. It was told to the franchises informally about the auction. BCCI is hoping that IPL will return to India this year. This year’s IPL was organized in UAE.
“The BCCI has told us to be prepared for an auction in a couple of months. Though it is not official that they have asked us to be ready, they will go ahead as planned. Moreover, with a new team coming in, it makes sense to have an auction now rather than deferring it by a year,” a franchise official told TNIE.
According to an inside source, IPL 2021’s auction is being planned for a long time. BCCI is also planning to add a new team in the next edition of IPL. It will be the ninth team. The aim of introducing the ninth team is to bring financial stability that was imbalanced due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The retention policy should continue even if a new team comes in because, at this stage, it won’t be wise to have all players in the auction pool. Teams will have to compromise on the brand value which is built on their star players,” said another franchise official.
The rumors are that the retention policy will not be there this time. All the players will be in the pool for every franchise to buy. Moreover, the introduction of a new team will give the new team key players. Stay tuned for more IPL 2021 news.
