Harry B. Macklowe (born 1937) is a real estate developer and investor in New York City.

Early Years:

Macklowe was born into a Jewish household in Westchester County, New York, the son of a garment boss. He attended the University of Alabama, New York University, and the School of Visual Arts before dropping out in 1960 to pursue a career as a real estate salesman. He married Linda Burg, the daughter of a doctor, in 1959. She worked at Doubleday as an editing assistant. They moved into a garden apartment in Brooklyn, where Harry became interested in the owner’s brownstone-renovation company, and the landlord supported Harry, guiding him into a position as a real estate broker.

Private Life:

Macklowe married Linda Burg on January 4, 1959. Burg filed for divorce in 2016 after more than 50 years of marriage. He marries Patricia Lazar-Landeau in 2019 following a difficult $2 billion divorce. Macklowe erected a large portrait of himself and his new wife on the corner of 432 Park Avenue, which was generally seen as a dig at his former wife.

Following their high-profile divorce, Sotheby’s auctioned off the couple’s vast collection of artwork by artists such Alberto Giacometti, Mark Rothko, and Cy Twombly in two halves as part of a court order in November 2021. The first half of the collection, valued at roughly $600 million, sold for considerably more at auction, bringing in $676 million. It was dubbed the “most valuable single-owner auction ever” by Sotheby’s. When Sotheby’s presented part two of the auction on May 16, 2022, the auction house set a new record for a private art collection sold at auction, bringing the total to $922 million, including fees. William S. Macklowe and Elizabeth Macklowe are the Macklowes’ two children.

In 2008, William took over as President of Macklowe Properties from his father. He and his wife are members of the Hamptons Jewish Center synagogue. William married and divorced Tory Burch, an American fashion designer, in 1993. William married Julie Lerner at the Metropolitan Club in New York City in a Jewish wedding in 2004. Elizabeth was married to Kent Swig, the son of fellow real estate mogul Melvin Swig, but they divorced.

Macklowe’s Marriage Life:

With possibly one of the most remarkable and magnificent acts of pettiness witnessed in recent divorce history, the Harry Macklowe divorce has skyrocketed in New York City, sparking discussions on the extent to which spouses would go to get back at an ex.

Billionaire real estate magnate Harry Macklowe, 82, presented his new wife, Patricia Landeau, with a magnificent declaration of love in the shape of a giant picture on his world-famous 432 Park Avenue condominium complex, which is also the world’s highest residential structure. Each of the couple’s black and white portraits measures 42 feet by 24 feet.

“I couldn’t rent an airplane with a banner to fly up and down the beachfront since I wasn’t being married in the Hamptons during the summer.” ‘I own a building,’ I reasoned. ‘Why don’t I just put up a flag on my own building?’ According to the New York Times, Macklowe

“As a long-time family law litigator, the posting of these big images in such a prominent form appears to epitomize the petty conduct that high-conflict persons typically display in the divorce process,” says Susan Guthrie, a 2018 Top Attorney in the category of Family Law and Mediation.

The Harry Macklowe Divorce: What We Know.

Linda Macklowe, the millionaire real estate mogul’s ex-wife, filed for divorce in 2016 after learning about his connection with Landeau. They had been married for more than 50 years. According to reports, Harry offered Linda a $1 billion divorce settlement in 2017, which she turned down. In September 2017, their divorce trial began.

The wedding gift for Harry’s French bride, who married him on March 7, might possibly be a subtle dig at his ex-wife. The huge “proclamation of love” was displayed on the building for everyone in New York City to see, causing quite a fuss for the divorcing couples. Linda Macklowe is said to have turned down a $14.4 million offer to buy the couple’s 78th-floor apartment at 432 Park Avenue, which is now decorated with photographs of her ex-husband and his one-time mistress. According to reports, the flat was a contentious issue between the two spouses throughout the divorce.

Harry maintains the deed was motivated by love, but the enormity (and complication) of his protracted divorce speaks for itself.

Harry Macklowe’s Notorious Divorce Settlement:

Justice Laura Drager of the Manhattan Supreme Court ordered the couple to share their $2 billion wealth in half in 2018. This included dividing their $700 million art collection and bringing an end to tumultuous 14-week divorce litigation.

While it has been reported that Linda attempted to use the Park Avenue property as a weapon during the divorce proceedings, it is clear that the property is now being used as a whole new kind of weapon for Harry Macklowe – one that isn’t afraid to show its vindictive face to all of New York City and beyond.

Most people consider Harry Macklowe’s actions to be excessive, but he seemed unconcerned: “My wife looks wonderful, and I adore the picture of me,” Harry stated of the pictures.

“Putting aside the financial expense of such a ‘proclamation of love,’ which would be out of reach for many people, my experience with persons going through a divorce is that this outlandish exhibition is out of the ordinary and would be considered excessive.” Mr. Macklowe’s apparent response that he loves the photo of himself is maybe the most revealing of all,” Guthrie argues.

New York Supreme Court Justice Alan Scheinkman performed the wedding of Harry Macklowe and Patricia Landeau. The event was hosted on the 78th floor of the Park Avenue building itself, which was appropriate given that it was the same floor that Harry and Linda argued over throughout their infamous divorce proceedings. World-famous event planner David Monn transformed the whole 78th floor into a large ballroom.

That’s one way to commemorate a new marriage – or a contentious divorce settlement.”In any case, I wish Mr. Macklowe and his new bride happiness, as well as the peace of mind that comes with the divorce being finalized.” After a tumultuous divorce, I’ve found that moving on is the best thing for everyone.”
